Who are you?
I’m an interdisciplinary artist thinking about blackness, being, and resistance in the context of networked virtual life. I use video, installation, new media, and writing to reveal how the history of power is embedded in our daily lives. I spend a lot of my time thinking about how we create equality for those left out of history, and what that might visually look like. Due to my legal name change I’ve only very recently become googleable... though I’m still not recognized by many systems (technological or societal).
What are you working on?
While I’m at Eyebeam I’m continuing my research into the development of the Graphical User Interface (GUI). It’s what you use to communicate with a computer, and it’s also how we come across most information these days. The most compelling part about it is that before the 70s computer screens were black, but now, when you open a new doc or go search online, the background is typically white. It wasn’t always like that. I want to make work about the ideological assertion of whiteness as neutral.
What are you most excited about?
To be honest, there are a lot of great things about Eyebeam. I’ve been coming to events for a long time, and of the many communities I’m a part of in New York, Eyebeam has been one of the most welcoming.
