The Eyebeam Roadshow will be participating in the
2010 01SJ Biennial in San Jose, September 4-19, 2010. Under this year's theme,
Build Your Own World, the biennial will present hundreds of artworks, performances, events, and artist talks, which not only imagine the future of the world, but begin to build it.
The Eyebeam Roadshow will be included in the exhibition,
Out of the Garage Into the World, in which independent artists, designers, architects, engineers, programmers, and corporate and academic research programs will publicly work in San Jose’s 80,000 square foot “South Hall” to create projects for exhibition, performance, provocation, and interaction.

A ticket for a trip is an object that gives you exclusive access to an unexplored place. It is a mere piece of paper, but it carries imagination and anticipation of the future, of what new world it can unlock. The Ticket Machine is a Rube Goldberg type collaborative installation which is triggered with a push of a button. The machine then unveils different worlds, created by the collaborators, and finally produces a printed ticket.
The workshop will start off with a brief talk about Rube Goldberg machines and some design exercises centered around brainstorming and collaboration. We will then explore some simple technical tools, components, the Arduino Mega and other materials. We will then form small teams of 2-3 people. Preferably engineers and hobbyist with with various artists and craftspeople.
This workshop is for: Engineers, hobbyists, tinkerers, artists, designers. This workshop is for adults. Teens are welcome to sign-up, but we expect you to bring it!

Like television, film, audio, and other traditional media, software can be a very effective medium for humor, which, in turn, can be a powerful tool for activism, editorial, and hilarious jokes. Beyond simply rendering our CG, hosting our Flash animations, or providing a target for nerd jokes, the computer can be exploited for its strengths (interactivity, procedurality, logic, networkability) to achieve the funny. In this workshop, participants will work together to answer questions such as: what is humor in the context of software? Are there such things as funny algorithms? We will explore tropes and mechanisms frequently used in software - not just games, but software art and plain old software - that can be used to achieve a humorous effect. And ultimately, invent the field of software comedy in the same way that there are comedy writers, actors, and even singers. We will explore what makes good humor in traditional media by looking at several comedy styles such as absurdism, prop humor, sketch comedy, improv, and black comedy, with special attention to parody and satire. We will also look at some software artists who have already struck software comedy gold, including Cory Archangel, Max Goldberg ("YTMND"), Ze Frank, and Evan Roth. We will apply the ideas of game theorists and other prominent software gurus such as Ian Bogost, Chris Crawford, and Tim Berners-Lee to the styles of comedians such as Tim and Eric, Andy Kaufman, Yakov Smirnov, Douglas Adams, Stephen Colbert, Mr. Show, the Wondershowzen team, and Eric Fensler to produce funny software.
The workshop will culminate in a stand-up style presentation during the 01 festival. All of the example code will be provided in openFrameworks and we will do a brief introduction to openFrameworks on the first day, but the workshop is not language-specific. You may also work in Processing, Flash, HTML -- whatever kind of code you write.

First Person Perspective is a workshop and collaboration between artist Taeyoon Choi and San Jose youth to create a movie shot entirely in ‘first person perspective’ using DIY headcams made from recycled materials. We will discuss the unique role of first person perspective in the history of filmmaking, ranging from cinéma vérité documentary film to online user generated video. Participants will take on the role of director, actor, cameraman and editor in order to develop their point of view about private and public spaces. Workshop participant’s work will be presented at the Eyebeam exhibition space at 01SJ, as well as the project website.
First Person Perspective is presented in collaboration with Adobe Youth Voices | 01SJ.
This workshop is for: Aspiring young artists and filmmakers between the ages of 14-19. Maximum 10 participants. Equipment and technology will be provided.

In this workshop, participants will assemble and take home their own Personal PowerPlant. The Personal powerPlant is a portable device that harnesses electricity through a hand crank generator (with solar cell option) into a rechargeable battery for use in powering portable electronic devices through a USB terminal. The workshop will begin with an introduction to circuit basics and a group discussion on sustainable energy harvesting. In this performative lecture and discussion Taeyoon Choi and invited artists will examine ideas presented in Taeyoon's new project 'Urban Programming 101: Stage Directions'. Excerpt text from the book: "There is a logical system in which urban spaces operate; therefore it is understood as a 'program'. 'Programming' urban space means controlling your urban experience and producing your space...I realized producing an alternative space is indifferent to experimenting alternative politics. I'd like to take you on a journey of thinking creatively and critically about urban space, hoping there still is a space for intervention and creative community."

The Eyebeam Roadshow is what you get when you mix a rock & roll tour with the talented fellows and resident artists of Eyebeam. It is an event organized by the artists as a way to bring their work to places where it would not otherwise be seen. The Roadshow consists of talks and workshops that are designed specifically to blow minds. So far, the Roadshow has traveled to over 20 locations in the U.S. and UK, spreading open source art and technology wherever it goes.
