Data Viz Challenge: Skillshare

Designers, developers, journalists, and artists: Get a head start on your entry for the Data Viz Challenge! 1:00–2:30PM  Get seasoned advice in a discussion and workshop led by George Michael Brower and Jono Brandel (designers, Google Creative Lab), Aaron Meyers (Eyebeam Fellow and interactive media designer), and Evan You (designer of Internet Censorship). 2:30–6:00PM  Start visualizing your taxes! Work on your own or as a team with guidance from our Skillshare leaders. REGISTRATION IS CLOSED Free but limited to 30 participants. Hot drinks and sweet/salty carbs provided. We will be livestreaming at http://livestream.com/eyebeam DESCRIPTION: Led by a team of data viz all-stars, we will check out examples of great visualizations, using the Data Viz Challenge judging criteria to frame our conversation. From there, we will dig into the WhatWePayFor.com data set and discuss ideas for telling compelling visual stories about our taxes. Developers (or those interested in learning how to query an API) will take a closer look at Jono Brandel's fully annotated sample visualization and George Micheal's documentation of the WhatWePayFor.com data set. Designers, journalists, and artists will dig into the raw data, parse out juicy stories, and check out tools for creating visualizations. Leaders of the skillshare will be on hand to provide design and coding support. Come by yourself, or bring a team! This skillshare is organized in support of the Data Viz Challenge, created by Eyebeam and Google, with data provided by WhatWePayFor.com. •••• How Eyebeam Skillshares work Eyebeam's skillshares are peer-to-peer working/learning sessions that provide an informal context for developing new skills alongside leading developers and artists. Skillshares begin with an introduction that includes basic how-tos. Afterward, participants work on individual projects while getting feedback, ideas, and additional instruction from each other and Skillshare leaders. It's a great way to boost your skills and meet like-minded people. Your skill level All skill levels are welcome, though you will get the most out of this skillshare if you have at least a basic understanding of what a data visualization is, and have even dabbled in making your own (graphic or interactive). What You Should Bring You'll need to bring your own laptop and power supply. If you have an insulated coffee cup, or a water bottle bring them.
